No need to use a 3rd party service such as bit.ly or tinyurl.com with Twitter to shorten links and save characters.
According to the official Twitter blog, Twitter now automates this process.
When you paste and post a link, Twitter will reduce it to 19 characters.

Twitter Turns 5 Next Week

Social media darling and microblogging service Twitter turns 5 years old next week. According to CNET (and its SXSW 2011 coverage), Twitter delivers 140 million tweets a day. A billion tweets are posted in one week. In addition, Twitter now boasts 400 employees.

The Pew Internet & American Life Project has released its first report solely focused on Twitter. According to them, 8% of adult American use the microblogging service. A reminder that Twitter has its own search engine, which is a great source for real time content.
